The Just Breathe Technique
College Students
College students this is such a great time in your life. Free to live at school and while learning to manage your time and your stresses well. Yet something is amiss these days with college students across the country.
College students have reported that the largest struggle they are facing today is depression, coupled with feelings of isolation, inadequacy, anxiety and inability to concentrate and connect deeply and meaningfully with others. This seems to be reaching epidemic proportions as MTV University has chosen depression as a main focus for their 2007-2008 campaign.
A recent issue of Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, featured the article, “Dramatic Increases seen in College students’ mental health problems over last 13 years.” A Kansas State University Counseling Center Study Shows More Students Seeking Help for Depression, Thoughts of Suicide and Sexual Assault. The number of students seen each year with depression doubled, while the number of suicidal students tripled and the number of students seen after a sexual assault quadrupled.
The world today is in a precarious place of change and transition. Having spoken with dozens of college students across the country there seems to be an underlying sentiment of fear, powerlessness and helplessness to affect change in their world. So as John Mayer put it, “We’re waiting on the world to change.” The above mentioned feelings all contribute to feelings of depression and thoughts of suicide. I too have suffered with depression for the better part of my life. And have been finding a way out of it for the better part of 20 years.
I developed The Just Breathe Technique as a method to help myself restore peace and harmony in my own life and learn to effectively deal with and release that sense of powerlessness and regain my inner strength to be a positive force of light in this darkening world. Focusing on my breath has helped me learn to stay neutral and see more clearly the root causes of the stress, powerlessness and fear I was experiencing. This is a powerful message and gift shown to me that I am honored to share with you.
